Overview

Engineers have a great impact on our lives. As engineer-pioneer von Karman said, “Scientists explore what is; engineers create what has never been.”
An engineering education requires a solid foundation in humanities and social studies as well as a thorough knowledge of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and engineering principles. It also demands an understanding of environmental issues to minimize the adverse effects of design, construction, and manufacturing.

If you’re planning to major in engineering, UWFox offers courses that cover the pre-engineering curriculum. Your junior and senior years at your transfer school are devoted in large part to specialized engineering coursework.

The field has more than 25 different areas of specialization and many subdivisions. Regardless of the branch you choose, you’ll be taught the application of science and math theories to practical technical problems.

Career Opportunities

What are some of the engineering specialties you can choose from?

  • If you enter aerospace engineering, you’ll be involved with designing, developing, and producing commercial and military aircraft, missiles, or spacecraft.
  • In agricultural engineering, you might design agricultural machinery and equipment or develop methods to improve the production, processing, or distribution of agricultural products.
  • Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry and engineering to solve problems involving the production or use of chemicals.
  • As an environmental engineer, you might create new environmental regulations, provide clean drinking water, remediate hazardous waste sites, or work with industry to make products and processes more sustainable.
  • Civil engineers, who work in the oldest branch of engineering, design and supervise the construction of roads, airports, tunnels, bridges, water supply, sewage systems, and buildings.
  • Electrical and computer engineers are concerned with the analysis, design, development, operation, and research of electrical and electronic systems and their component parts.
  • Industrial engineers determine the most effective way for an organization to use the basic factors of production: people, machines, and materials.
  • Mechanical engineers plan and design tools, engines, machines, and other mechanical equipment.

These are just a handful of possibilities; the field of engineering is broad and diverse, offering plenty of exciting options.
