Reading cartoonCourses in English at the UW-Fox Valley are designed to improve students’ writing skills and their ability to think more critically and creatively. The English 101 and English 102 composition series fosters skills needed in courses across the curriculum by focusing on writing expository and argumentative prose, reading for comprehension and engagement, and conducting and documenting research. Regularly offered literature courses provide introductions to English literature, American literature, nature writing, poetry, sports literature, world literature, multicultural literature, and Shakespeare. Upper-division writing courses include Creative Writing and Business Communication (cross-listed as Business 210).

Students who take writing and literature courses develop abilities in written communication, persuasion, cultural understanding, and synthesizing and analyzing new information. All of these skills are useful in the professions students begin to prepare for at Fox. Career options available to students with a BA in English include: business/technical writing, education, corporate training, corporate communications, journalism, magazine/book editing, grant writing, fundraising, and private and public research.
