Placement tests in English and mathematics are required of all students who enter the UW Colleges. These tests are specific to the UW System. Therefore, tests from other colleges and universities outside the UW system do not replace them.
If a student plans to enroll in a foreign language course above first-semester level, a test must be taken for that language. We offer tests in Spanish, French, and German. Many baccalaureate campuses require foreign language for either admission or graduation. A foreign language placement test is recommended for those who have taken prior courses in a foreign language and wish to continue those studies. Depending on the placement, the student may be eligible to earn retroactive college credits.
The math and English tests are 90 minutes each and the foreign language test is 60 minutes. A student may take only two tests on the same date.
Non-graphing calculators only may be used for the math test. Students should arrive 15-20 minutes prior to test time to check in and get materials. Students will need two No. 2 pencils and their social security number. ONCE THE TEST HAS BEGUN, LATE STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ADMITTED. TESTS WILL BEGIN ON TIME.
IMPORTANT! Test results must be in prior to registration. Therefore, schedule tests at least three weeks before your registration date. You will not be allowed to register for your classes without taking the placement tests! If a student previously took an English or math class at another college or university, the placement test(s) may not be necessary. Any questions about this should be directed to the Student Services Office.

Tests should be taken at least 3 weeks prior to the registration date for classes. When students arrive to campus, they should use the Barlow Planetarium entrance. Signs will be posted for the check-in site and testing rooms.
