Shannon Tweedie (2006-2008)
Award: UW Colleges August Derleth Creative Writing Prize
Shannon Tweedie (FOX ’08) can remember the first poem she ever wrote. She was a young girl, sitting outside on the grass, and the inspiration hit her. “I thought – I can do this!” she laughs. Fast forward to the present, and Tweedie is the second UWFox student in so many years to win the prestigious UW Colleges August Derleth Creative Writing Prize. She credits Bill Gillard, assistant professor of English and the writer’s club advisor, with helping her polish her craft. A constant journal keeper, Tweedie is awaiting news from the University of Limerick in Ireland or Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland, where she hopes to complete her journalism degree. What follows is an excerpt of “Liquid Sugar: Unrefined” by Shannon Tweedie. For the full text of her short story, click here (PDF document).
