Since 1998, the Barlow Planetarium has offered Wisconsin Space Academy (WSA) – multiple levels span three overlapping age groups – to explore the thrill of astronomy, space and science through hands-on rocketry activities. Barlow has expanded its offerings to offer Wisconsin Astronomy Academy (WAA) to learn about our place in the Universe through hands-on astronomy activities.

- Supply fees cover the costs of the rockets, binoculars and telescopes students use during and keep after the program.

Wisconsin Space Academy
Level I – Blast Off (Completed Grades 3 – 5)
Date: July 23-27, 2012
Time: 9 am - 12 noon

- Build, customize, and launch a model rocket
- Each participant receives rocketry supplies valued at more than $45.
Level II -- Payloads (Completed Grades 4 – 6)
Date: July 30-August 3, 2012
Time: 9 am - 12 noon

- Build, customize, and launch a model rocket that launches and returns a small egg safely to the ground.
- Each participant receives rocketry supplies valued at more than $45.
Level III – Fly Higher (Completed Grades 5 – 8)
Date: August 6-10, 2012
Time: 9 am - 12 noon
Fee: $125.00/$112.50/$100.00
Supply Fee: $35
- Build, customize, and launch a model rocket that uses two stages and two engines for the highest possible flights.
- Each participant receives rocketry supplies valued at more than $45.
Wisconsin Astronomy Academy
Level I – Constellations (Completed Grades 3 – 5)
Date: July 23-27, 2012
Time: 1 - 4 pm

- Learn how to use stars to find your way on Earth and in the sky
- Recognize the summer constellations and how they relate to each other.
- Each participant receives a set of binoculars valued at more than $30.
Level II – Solar System (Completed Grades 4 – 6)
Date: July 30-August 3, 2012
Time: 1 - 4 pm

- Discover what makes each of the planets fascinating and unique.
- Each participant will receive a fully-functional replica of Galileo’s refracting telescope valued at $40.
Level III – Deep Space (Completed Grades 5 – 8)
Date: August 6-10, 2012
Time: 1 - 4 pm

Supply Fee: $100
- Discover distant celestial objects that only a telescope can see.
- Each participant will receive a fully-functional tabletop reflecting telescope valued at $120.
