MindStorms™ Mission...The Next Generation, a program for students entering grades 6 through 8 in the fall of 2008. (Fourth and Fifth graders who want to experience Mindstorms™ Mission may do so at College for Kids. Mindstorms™Mission…The Next Generation has been redesigned to include ROBOLAB™ and NXT Robot System.

It will stimulate your imagination and creativity while letting you explore, experience, and express your world — a world without limits. However, what remains the same is a program designed where the emphasis remains on programming, robot building and TEAMWORK and where teams compete in a tournament of imagination and engineering ingenuity. And, oh yeah, you’ll have a blast while doing it!!!

The following concepts will be emphasized in all levels:

  • Mechanics
  • Basic Programming
  • Teamwork
  • Creativity
  • Robotic Control Systems
  • Imagination
  • Problem Solving
  • General Science, Math & Technology Concepts

2008 Classes

Drawing and Painting Studio - Picasso to Van Gogh
Instructor: John Polansky

Join us while we explore the world of Art while drawing and painting pictures inspired by the works of the great masters. During our time together, we will have the opportunity to draw and paint using colored pencils, pastels, and acrylics. Surfaces will range from the expected...paper, to the exploratory...Plexiglas. No art experience needed. Our expectation for the class is for you to express yourselves and your individuality. So just come ready to experiment with some new mediums, to think outside of the box, not take yourself too seriously, get a little dirty, and have a whole lot of FUN!!!!

Digital Graphics
Instructor: Jason LaVigne

Just think about it. Your life is filled with technology. You’ve got a cell phone, DVD player, iPod, and you use the Web on a daily basis. We use software such as PowerPoint, Photoshop, Publisher, FrontPage, and more. If all of this confuses you, don’t worry, instead learn from someone who probably has it pretty well mastered, your grandchild. Join us as we dabble in some of the software to create a variety of projects, such as a mug, t-shirt, name cards, etc.—items that you create together and will remember for a very long time.

Horticulture
Instructor: Kevin Jarek

Discover the secret world of plants. Horticulturists’ at Grandparents’ U® at UWFox will learn about the profiles of soil while making edible dirt, discover how to heal a wounded plant, create a miniature botanic garden to take home, and discover how to turn one plant into several. Then you’ll look at various way that you can help keep the environment save and clean by some of the simple things that we do each and every day.

Zoology
Instructor: Terri Gonya

Animals have interesting habits that scientists have studied for years. We will look at habitat selections in darkling beetles, flatworm responses to chemical changes in their environment,  how hydra respond to food, and how worms respond to drugs such as caffeine and cough syrup. The focus of the class will be on live animals and their responses to changes in their environment.

Theatre
Instructor: Nichole Polster

Kids of all ages, from eight to eighty, come together for this unique opportunity to explore the actor that lies within us all! Grandparent and grandchildren actors will have loads of fun as they learn what goes into making the theater come alive. At Grandparents’ U® at UWFox “actors” will participate in pantomimes, improvisations, theatre games, and vocal expression exercises to release the actor in you. Participants will perform with workshop members in a mini performance at the last class. No acting experience needed. Just come ready to have fun and a willingness to think outside of the box.

Engineering
Instructor:  Melissa Sternhagen

Engineering can take you from the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space, from within the microscopic structures of the human cell to the top of the tallest skyscrapers. Engineers at Grandparents’ U® at UWFox will experiment with everything from simple machines, to cars, to spacecraft, to bridges. By the end of the two days you will look at things like eggbeaters, lawnmowers and transportation from a whole new point of view—-an engineer’s point of view.

Technology/Robotics
Instructor:  Nels Lawrence

When you combine hands-on science, high technology, a bit of computer programming and playing with LEGOS®, what do you get---an interactive project that stimulates your imagination and creativity while letting you explore, experience, and express your world — a world without limits. Using gizmos and gadgets from the LEGO® MindStorms™ Robotics Inventions System, technologists at Grandparents’ U® at UWFox will experiment with sensors and motors to design and program robots to carry out challenges within a mission and then compete with other teams in a tournament of imagination and engineering ingenuity. Absolutely no computer experience is necessary; however, the love to compete and solve problems is required. NOTE: If you register for this class, you will be in this class the entire day for both days. This class is designed for 11 and 12 year olds and their grandparents.
