Computer Literacy Courses

Which Courses

Courses numbered 100-199 are intended to familiarize students with computers without getting deeply into computer programming. (Courses numbered 200 and above are generally considered computer programming courses.) Literacy courses include the following.

Where to Start

These courses tend to impart particular skills to students. Knowing what skills you wish to gain will allow you to select the appropriate course. Here are a few rules of thumb.

  • If you are looking for a broad overview of computers and a gentle introduction to programming, try CPS 110.
  • If you want an overview of the use of computers without programming, the combination of CPS 103, 106, 107 and 108 transfers well.
  • If you are uncomfortable with computers and just want to get your feet wet, try CPS 101, 103 or 104.
  • If you wish to gain specific skills with a particular software application or office suite, try one of CPS 105, 106, 107, 108 or 109.
  • If you want to learn the basics of developing Web pages without too much programming, try CPS 139.
  • If you are interested in the application of computers in business environments, consider BUS 230 from the Business department.
