Cyclones take championship
By Coach Lor
The 2011 Cyclones soccer team had a great season, capturing its third consecutive Wisconsin Collegiate Conference and third consecutive Wisconsin Collegiate Conference State Tournament titles.
The team also finished runner-up at the 2011 University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac Pre-Season Invitational.
After its opening loss to UW-Sheboygan (3-4), the Cyclones went undefeated for the rest of the season, with 14 wins and 2 ties.
Giving the competitive nature of the WCC, to have a 16 game streak without loss is quite an achievement.
The Cyclones finished the season with a 7-0 conference record and a 14-1-2 overall record.
The Cyclones scored 80 goals and gave up 23 goals.
In their last 13 thirteen games, the Cyclones gave up only 10 goals and had 7 shutouts.
The defense was led by Nick Neuhoff (SPASH), TJ LaCrosse (De Pere), Kyle Bissen (Sturgeon Bay), Tony Reffke (Kimberly), Brian Loomis (Menasha), Samuel Schultz (St. Mary Central) and Eric Gonnering (Freedom).
Lead players for the Cyclones were Juac Majok (Oshkosh North) with 24 goals, Nathaneal Miller (Winneconne) with 17 goals and Yang Sor Lee (Green Bay West) with 12 goals.
Leading the team in assist were Yang Sor Lee with 12 assists, Nathaneal Miller with 7 assists and Josh LaMarche (Winnecone) and Mbua Fonkem (Appleton East) each with 5 assists.
Reserves Royale Fischer (Neenah), Michael Charteris (Hortonville), Kristy Vande Hey (FVL), and Jamie Williams (Appleton East) all played critical roles.
One of the best ways to describe the team this year was said by one of the team captains, "We are a team!"
Best wishes to second year players Nick Neuhoff, Tony Reffke and Kristy Vande Hey who committed two years to the Cyclones Soccer program.
The Cyclones look forward to the 2012 season and to give the same level of dedication, intensity and excellence!
