Age: 19
Hometown: Appleton, WI
Current residence: Appleton, WI
When attended UWFox: Fall 2011 to present
Background before UWFox
I went to Appleton East High School and graduated in Spring 2011. I began working at McDonald’s when I was a junior in high school. Every summer I work at my dad’s job, at Miller Electric as an assembly line worker. I’ve only been to one state other than Wisconsin, and that was Tennessee for a spring break vacation. I’ve been a part of tutoring my peers in the areas of math and science. From these experiences, I’ve gained a greater perspective on the struggles that many students face when studying.
Why did you choose UWFox?
I chose to go to UWFox mostly because it is only 10 minutes from my house, and it’s very affordable. With the gracious scholarships that I have received from the UW-Fox Valley Foundation, I won’t have to pay any out of pocket expenses while attending UWFox. I also chose UWFox because my brothers had attended this university.
Have you chosen a major?
I plan on majoring in Accounting with a minor in Finance.
What are you learning that you find interesting and rewarding at UWFox?
What I find the most rewarding about UWFox is that the class sizes are perfect for me. That allows for a lot of “1 on 1” time with your professors if you need it. Also, I enjoy the college being a little smaller than the larger campuses because you get an opportunity to know a lot of people personally. The thing that I find most interesting is all the groups that are available in a mini-sized university. If a person has extra time and wants to get involved in an extracurricular group, then there are multiple opportunities for one to do so. Of all the groups, I would like to encourage CRU. This is a group that spends time talking about the Bible and relating it to real life situations.
What are your career plans after UWFox?
After UWFox, I plan on transferring to UW Oshkosh in the fall of 2012. I look to finish with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and a minor in Finance. I will most likely finish college with 150 credits so I can take the CPA examine. If everything goes according to plan, I would like to be working for a public or private accounting firm in the Fox Valley area right after I graduate from college with my bachelor’s degree. If jobs are scarce and I need to travel, I’ll embark on the journey wherever it might lead me.
Other interesting things about yourself that you’d like to share?
I was the valedictorian of my class at Appleton East. Also, I’m a WIAA State Tennis player, and at UWFox, I was able to be a part of the Wisconsin Collegiate Conference 2012 Boys State Title Team. As far as the community goes, I have done some work with my church. I was a part of a serving team at Monarch Gardens that provided numerous families with Thanksgiving meals. Also, I’ve volunteered my time at some Appleton East Youth Basketball Association tournaments as a concession stands worker. In my free time, if a fellow classmate needs help with math, you can find me in the library simplifying problems.
