“I have a family to take care and that takes a lot of my time. UWFox is close to my home and is more affordable than the bigger universities.”
Hometown: Minneapolis, MN
Current residence: Neenah, WI
When attended UWFox: Fall 2008-Spring 2011
Background before UWFox:
“I graduated from Southwest HS in Minneapolis, in 1982 and had many interesting jobs while I was in high school. My favorite job as well as the longest position I held was as a sales associate in a sporting apparel shop. It was fun getting to know the customers as I helped them out. I was amazed at how much money some people can spend on clothing! My dad once told me that if I was old enough to get a job that I should never quit a job without having another one to go to.”
“While I’ve been to a lot of places, the most interesting place I visited was when my best friend was moving to Arizona after high school, and we drove there from Minneapolis. The parts of this country that I saw were amazing to me. We even ran out of gas in a little town called Last Chance, CO! The mountains in Colorado are the most beautiful I’ve ever seen.”
Why did you choose UWFox?
“My very close friend is a staff member at the campus. She saw the opportunity for me to go to college again. I wanted to go back to college for a long time but was hesitant because I wasn’t sure I could travel to do it. I have a family to take care and that takes a lot of my time. UWFox is close to my home and is more affordable than the bigger universities. Since it’s a smaller campus I felt more comfortable with jumping into college again after being out of the classroom for so long.”
Have you chosen a major?
“I want to major in English and minor in Creative Writing, but also have thoughts about Journalism or Communications. I never realized how many opportunities there are for me to consider.”
What are you learning that you find interesting and rewarding at UWFox?
“I am learning so much about myself here at UWFox. By being an adult student I find myself feeling like everybody’s ‘mother.’ I’m also finding out how many just like me are on campus. I’m part of the ‘A.N.T.S.’ [Adult Non-Traditional Students] club. It’s great to find and connect with others that are walking the same path that I am.
“I’ve recently been nominated and selected to be a volunteer ‘UWFox Ambassador,’ so I’ll have the opportunity to represent the campus and do a lot of networking with campus guests and visitors.
“I see the learning process as a wonderful opportunity that I took for granted after I graduated from high school. I’m more focused now and excited about getting a college education. I share all my experiences on campus with my family and hope to be an inspiration for them.”
What are your career plans after UWFox?
“I’m not sure what’s out there for a writing career for me. Getting to know some of the professors at the campus is helping me learn more about my future options.”
Other interesting things you’d like to share?
“I just encourage those adults who have started or returned to college not to give up. Take this new experience as one that will be rewarding. Stay focused, ask a lot of questions and work hard. Get to know those around you because it is such a wonderful time of growth!”
