The Fox Valley Concert Band presents its opening concert for the 2008-2009 season on Friday, October 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Art Theatre on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley.
The program is an eclectic mix of new and older works written expressly for the wind band plus transcriptions from the orchestral repertoire.
The concert will open with the overture from the opera “The Mill on the Cliff” by German composer Carl Gottlieb Riesseger. Vincent Persichetti wrote several fine works for band, and the audience will enjoy his “Psalm for Band.” Several works inspired by folk songs will be performed--Percy Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Derry,” “Folk Songs for Band” by David Stanhope, and the “Berceuse and Finale” from the ballet “Firebird” by Igor Stravinsky. The march for the evening, “Colonel Bogey,” by Kenneth Alford, honors the many golfers in the band.
The Fox Valley Concert Band, composed of university students, alumni and Fox Valley residents, is directed by Dr. Marc Sackman, conductor and associate professor of music at UWFox. The concert is free and open to the public with unreserved seating. For more information about this event, contact Dr. Sackman at 832-2625 or email email@example.com.
