The University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley has been selected to showcase the AIDS Memorial Quilt, which will be on display in the campus Fieldhouse on Friday, April 21, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 22, 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; and Sunday, April 23, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission to the viewing of the AIDS Memorial Quilt is free.
UWFox is the only venue in Wisconsin currently hosting sections of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, according to Jeff Kuepper, student activities coordinator at UWFox.
Founded in 1987, the AIDS Memorial Quilt is a visual reminder of the AIDS pandemic. In June of 1987, the first 40 panels of the Quilt were displayed at the San Francisco City Hall. Four months later the first 1,920 panels were displayed at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The Quilt was honored with a Nobel Peace Prize nomination in 1989. Today, the quilt consists of more than 46,000 individual memorial panels, weighing more than 54 tons. It includes panels from every state and 28 countries and is the largest piece of community art in the world. To date, more than 83,000 individual’s names are on the Quilt; this represents approximately 17.5% of all U.S. AIDS deaths. More than 15 million people have experienced the Quilt first hand.
The Quilt is a visual tool that illustrates the number of lives lost to the AIDS epidemic as well as a tool that humanizes the devastating threat of AIDS. The Quilt has served to open dialogue about the epidemic, to confront the stigma attached to AIDS, to help families and communities heal from their losses, and to motivate individuals to take direct, personal action to contain the spread of HIV and care for those living with the disease.
The University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley is located at 1478 Midway Road in Menasha. Free parking is available on the west side of the campus. For more information about UWFox hosting the display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt portions, contact Kuepper at 920-832-2671 or email him at email@example.com.
