The University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley is hosting an exciting collaborative concert featuring the combined bands from Appleton East and Appleton West high schools. This very special performance takes place on Sunday, March 13, at 7:00 p.m. in Perry Hall within UWFox’s new Communication Arts Center.

Titled, “The Appleton East and Appleton West Educational Band Trip to Italy,” the two high school bands are offering a one-time performance at UWFox as something of a dress rehearsal and a fund-raiser for its trip to Italy later this month. “Students paid for the trip through [their] personal dollars as well as group fundraising opportunities,” according to Carla Rabe, assistant dean for Student Services at UWFox, who was instrumental in bringing the performance to the Menasha campus.

Rabe cites that there will be a combined 49 students from both high schools and 20 parent chaperones.  “Mr. Michael Ross, the Band Director and teacher from Appleton West, and Ms. Margaret Lafleur, the Band Director and teacher from Appleton East, will be leading the student musicians,” Rabe said.

Italy was selected for this trip because, “Italy is where the history of the fine arts originated,” Lefleur said. “Italy is the beginning of all art history. It’s the most beautiful and historical place of culture, fine arts and music. The ancient land of Italy provides fascination of beauty and delight. This trip promises to provide an awesome educational experience for all travelers.”

The group’s trip lasts from March 24 through April 2.  “This is an educational trip where students will have the opportunity to explore and tour the arts as well as an extraordinary chance to perform in some of the most beautiful concert halls in Europe,” Rabe said.

Included in the group’s visit to Italy are tours of Venice, Montecatini, Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Tuscany-Siena, and Rome, with opportunities to visit and view many of the treasures that each of these wonderful cities holds.  The group will perform in Montecatini and Lucca.

The performance at UWFox is open to the public. “Donations are certainly accepted and appreciated,” Rabe said.  “All donations will be used to help pay for the cost of shipping the larger instruments that the student musicians will need when they perform in Italy.”
