UWFox Hosts 2012 Commencement Ceremony

On Thursday, May 17, at 7:00 p.m., the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley is celebrating it 38th annual commencement ceremony in the campus’ Fieldhouse.  UWFox Campus Executive Officer and Dean, Dr. Martin Rudd, is expected to host an audience of more than 500 family members, guests, dignitaries, faculty, staff and graduates for this ceremony.

Tim HigginsAppleton businessman and University of Wisconsin System Regent Tim Higgins is this year’s commencement speaker. Higgins graduated from UW-Madison with a B.A. and went on to earn his law degree from the Kent College of Law in Chicago. He has been a community leader for many years and has been dedicated to improving the quality of life in the Fox Cities. 

The 2012 UWFox commencement ceremony has several very special aspects as part of the program. The UWFox/UW-Platteville collaborative engineering program will recognize six of eight students who have earned the Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. The six will receive their degree, as well as the “Order of the Engineer” ring, from UW-Platteville faculty and staff who will be in attendance at the ceremony. 

The students who will be receiving their B.S.M.E. include:

  • Alex Huss (Greenville);
  • Eric Korth (New London);
  • Benjamin Marquard (Grand Chute);
  • Jeffrey Mrotek (Appleton);
  • Cristopher Muchowski (Manitowoc);
  • Joshua Mueller (Neenah);
  • Steve Volkman (Oshkosh).

UWFox has recognized 188 students who have qualified for the Associate of Arts and Science Degree, including those who completed their requirements at the end of the fall 2011 semester. Approximately 100 of the qualifying students are expected to robe and participate in the 2012 commencement ceremony.

Of the 188 students who have qualified for the A.A.S. degree,

  • Three students have earned “Highest Honors,” with a 4.0 grade point average;
  • 11 have qualified for “High Honors,” with a 3.75-3.99 GPA;
  • 19 have qualified for “Honors,” with a 3.50-3.74 GPA;
  • 12 have qualified for Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor academic society for two-year campuses that require at least a 3.5 GPA to qualify for membership. 

One of the highlights of the ceremony will be the presentation of the 2012 “Outstanding Alumni Awards” by the UW-Fox Valley Foundation, Inc.  This year, the honors go to Dr. Ekokobe Fonkem and Mr. Tom Sonnleitner.

Fonkem attend UWFox in 1999-2000, and went on to earn is B.S. from UW-Madison and his medical degree from Ohio University. He did his internship and neurology training at Ohio State University. He is presenting working and teaching at Harvard University Medical Center in Boston.   

Sonnleitner attended UWFox from 1962-1965 after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy. He went on to earn his B.B.A. from UW-Madison and subsequently his CPA. He has held numerous administrative positions within the UW System and the West Virginia higher ed system. In 2000 he was appointed Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services at UW Oshkosh, and has overseen that campus’ significant growth. 

The Fox Valley Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Marc Sackman, UWFox associate professor of music, will provide music before, during and after the ceremony.
