The weather is warming, the flowers are getting ready to bloom, and the birds are chirping…nature's music is all around us.

The University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley is celebrating the Earth's annual rebirth with its Spring 2003 concert, presented Sunday, May 4, at 3:00 p.m. in the campus' Fine Arts Theatre. Admission is free and open to the public.

Performing during the concert are the UWFox Chorus and the Fox Valley Concert Band. The Fox Valley Concert Band is a “communi-versity band,” according to UWFox Associate Professor of Music Dave Jordahl, and Concert Band Director. “There are over 60 members of the Concert Band, with approximately 40 musicians being members of the Fox Cities community representing a wide range of ages for members.”

Among the highlights of this concert are a “Big Band” piece performed by members of the Fox Valley Concert Band and special guest Joseph Maehl of Neenah. Maehl is the Chairman of the Winnebago County Board of Supervisors and President of the UWFox Board of Trustees. Additionally, Maehl still performs with his trumpet regularly with regional big bands. During World War II, he served in the US Navy and traveled extensively with the Navy bands providing entertainment and service to Allied troops. After the war, Maehl toured nationally with several big bands and played with a wide variety of well known singers and band leaders.

A unique aspect of the Fox Cities Concert Band is that a number of UWFox alumnae regularly return to practice and perform with the current year’s musicians. Besides the UWFox students, “the Concert Band members’ backgrounds are quite diverse: some individuals are with major corporations, some are teachers, and some are retirees. All of them come together to play in this group for the same reason: the love of music,” Jordahl says. Jordahl has arranged to provide another outstanding program for this concert’s fare.
