"Hairspray" will delight Fox Valley audiences by sweeping them away to 1960s Baltimore, where the ’50s are out -- and change is in the air. Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad, has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show." Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program's reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love without mussing her hair?
Larissa Petersen, the actress playing Tracy in the UWFox production, is giddy with expectation. "We all have that wish list and Tracy has definitely always been one of my dream roles... for me, she is a role that breaks out of conventional stereotypes both off-stage – because of the physicality of the character, and on-stage – because of the important beliefs she stands up to defend."
Veteran local stage actor Jim Romenesko is playing "Tracy’s" mother, Edna. Commenting on his role, he said, "Am I excited? You bet! This role is right up there with Harold Hill and Peter Pan!! I love the journey Edna takes during the show! Early on, she tries to protect her daughter from the hurtfulness of the outside world. Then, by fighting to open doors for Tracy, she learns to love herself for who she is. When I saw the show just after it opened on Broadway, I turned to my friend and said: ‘When this show becomes available for community theatre groups....’ and she finished my sentence "You'll be wearing those heels."
