The Chancellor of the UW Colleges, Dr. David Wilson, and the Provost, Dr. Margaret Cleek, have announced that Dr. Thomas Pleger will serve as the Interim Campus Executive Office / Dean at the University of Wisconsin-Baraboo/Sauk County campus for the 2006-2007 fiscal year, starting July 1, 2006. Pleger currently serves as the Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Archaeology at the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley in Menasha.
Pleger has been the Associate Dean at UWFox since August 2001. In that role, he has overseen the development of the curriculum, the staffing plan budget, course schedules, as well as the recruitment and retention of instructional academic staff for the second largest of the 13 UW Colleges campuses.
Pleger has a Ph.D. in Anthropology/Archaeology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was appointed Assistant Professor of Anthropology/Archaeology at UWFox in 2000, becoming an Associate Professor in 2005. He is an active scholar and is a Registered Professional Archaeologist.
In his new role at UW-Baraboo, Pleger will work closely with the UW Colleges central office staff in Madison to ensure that the campus continues to move forward in the implementation of current campus plans and priorities.
“I am looking forward to working with UW-Baraboo faculty, staff, students, and community members,” Pleger said. “The UW-Baraboo campus is a real jewel in the UW System in terms of physical beauty and the quality of its faculty/staff and academic programming. The position will allow me to continue to develop my administrative skills. I have learned a great deal at UWFox as Associate Campus Dean and will miss my colleagues and friends during this appointment.”
Pleger said he would not rule out the possibility of applying for the position when it becomes permanent. However, at present, he sees this as an interim position to help the campus and the UW Colleges through this time transition.
Jim Perry, UWFox campus executive officer and dean said, “I'm pleased for Tom, and I think he will do a great job. UWFox will miss both his administrative and instructional acumen, but this is just too good of an opportunity for him to pass up. Tom has served as a real partner in the dean’s office endeavors.”
Perry announced that Dr. Martin Rudd, associate professor of chemistry, will serve as the Interim Associate Campus Dean at UWFox. “I’m honored to have been asked to step in to this position although it’s going to be a steep learning curve. I’m following in the footsteps of an excellent Associate Dean,” Rudd said. Rudd earned a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Warwick (England) and has been teaching at UWFox since 2002.
Pleger’s and Rudd’s changes will take place July 1. Pleger’s appointment is for one year, while Rudd has agreed to stay in the UWFox interim position until September 1, 2007, when Pleger will re-assume his UWFox position at that time.
