Dr. Stephen M. Leahy
Always Wanted to Study History
Steve earned a degree in Chemistry at the request of his parents. He remembers in his sophomore year walking back from a Chemistry lab and thinking, "College is pretty cool. Why would I ever want to leave?" He decided at that point that he would never leave college. During his senior year he decided to chuck Chemistry and do what he always wanted to do, while still getting the degree.
After earning advanced degrees in History, Steve started off his college teaching experience with 20th Century United States History, specializing in political and diplomatic history. Now studying immigration and ethnicity.
Steve likes to teach anything new that forces him to keep learning. Having said that, he loves teaching HIS 127, in which he introduces students to new types of music and then relates that music to the subject matter for the night.
UWFox - An Institution that has a Sense of Community.
Steve has been working at UWFox since 1995 and he believes that UWFox is an institution that has a sense of community. Having worked for other institutions, he knows how rare it is to find what UWFox has! Steve likes to work with UWFox students. He likes their maturity and likes the fact that most students have an understanding of governance issues and participate in the governance of the institution. He believes that this is a strength of the institution.
Steve enjoys good company and POETS (Pig Out Eaters & Tasters Society) is great for that. He likes the arts, especially world music, Shakespeare, and Broadway shows.
Steve participates in various community organizations and activities such as INDUS and the Polish American Historical Association serving that organization in a number of roles including Recording Secretary, Newsletter Editor, Awards Committee, Board of Directors.
